The Dispute Settlement Center employs five full-time staff members
and boasts over 40 professionally trained volunteer mediators.
Kate Stockman: Executive Director
Kate  has worked in the higher education and non-profit
arenas for most of her professional career.  Originally from
Charleston, SC, she earned a bachelor’s degree in English
Education from the University of South Carolina in 1974.
She and her husband Andrew moved to the WNC mountains
in 1991.
As the Executive Director of the Dispute Settlement Center of Henderson County,
Kate has the opportunity to educate others about alternative dispute resolution
processes as well as to manage and administer a non-profit organization.  She
has been trained in mediation and facilitation processes, and especially enjoys
facilitating groups.

Promoting peaceful conversations and building stronger communities is Kate’s
heart’s work.  She is thankful and proud to be able to work in a position that
meets her professional goals as well as fulfills her personal goals.

Kate and her family live in Hendersonville.  Parents of three teenagers, Kate and
Andrew have lots of opportunities to practice conflict resolution skills.  They are
also artists: Kate is a fiber, book, and jewelry artist and Andrew is an
accomplished wood turner.   Their family shares their home with three cats, who
have them all well-trained.
Jan Woloson: Director of Family Mediation
Her academic focus has been in education (BA), having taught elementary
& middle school, Counseling (MS) as a Licensed Professional Counselor
(LPC) & National Certified Counselor in private practice.  Jan does
consultant work regionally doing Team Building and Communication
workshops as well as teaching Mediation, Conflict Resolution in the Work
Place and Parenting Teens classes at Blue Ridge Community College,
where she occasionally leads workshops in leadership, team building
and ropes course activities.  Other areas of interest include teaching (and
participating in) outdoor activities including backpacking, rock climbing,
whitewater canoeing/kayaking, Mt. Biking and trail running.  Having once
worked as a paid carpenter Jan continues to relocate walls in her home
and act as her own plumber and electrician.
Christy Bridges: Director of Youth Mediation
Christy Bridges first became involved in mediation as a
peer mediator in high school in 1995.  Her interest in
mediation led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in
Speech Communication with a concentration in mediation
and conflict studies at James Madison University.  While
attending JMU, she played an active role in establishing a
student-operated mediation program that served the
school community and also became a certified mediator
for the Virginia Judicial System.
In 2002, Christy began working at the Dispute Settlement Center as the Youth
Mediation Services Director.  Christy is passionate about making a difference
in the lives of youth and teaching peace.  In her free time, she enjoys
spending time in the sun, traveling and spending time with friends and family.
Amanda Gaines: Community Mediation
Kimberly Travis: Administrative Assistant
Kimberly began working with the Dispute Settlement Center in
May 2005.  She earned her Bachelor’s degree from
Appalachian State University in 2003 in Political Science with a
concentration in International and Comparative Politics.
Her interests and course concentrations in Middle East conflicts led her to be
an active participant in ASU’s International Relations Association, also known
as Model UN.  This organization’s role is much the same as that of the DSC,
which is to come to resolutions through peaceful conversations.  Kimberly
spent her first two years at ASU in Watauga College, a two-year interdisciplinary,
residential honors program.

Kimberly took her Basic Mediation training in June 2005 through Dispute
Settlement Center.  She has since enjoyed learning and working with the
mediation process.  Other areas of interest for Kimberly are being outside,
running, skiing, refinishing furniture, reading, photography and most of all
spending time with her fiancé and their two dogs.
